Chapter 10 of 13

The Mystery You Cannot Buy

Eleusis was the mystery gold could not buy and nearly anyone could walk into. The fork prices transcendence and sells the darkness by the seat.

The common road

For nearly two thousand years there was one thing in the ancient world you could not buy, and everyone was allowed to have it.

The road to Eleusis ran fourteen miles out of Athens, and once a year the initiates walked it by torchlight, toward the hall of the mysteries. Look who walked. Not priests and the wealthy alone. The enslaved. Women. Foreigners, so long as they spoke Greek and had no blood on their hands. A slave and a statesman went down into the same darkness on the same night (and whatever happened in there, they kept the secret so well for so many centuries that we still do not know) and came out having stood in the same place before the same unknowable thing. It could not be bought. No price skipped the road. No donation spared the descent. You could only undergo it, in your own body, on your own feet. That was the whole design. The holiest experience in the ancient world was the one thing gold could not purchase and rank could not command.

Those conditions were the holiness. You had to be there, in the flesh. You could not tell afterward (the telling was forbidden), so it could not be summarized, packaged, sold as a report. It happened once, a descent you could not repeat on demand. There was a drink, the kykeon, barley and water and something else. Some scholars argue the something else was a fungus that grows on grain and turns the mind inside out, the family the first modern psychedelic was drawn from. That is a famous hypothesis, not a fact, and I will not build on it. Build on Demeter and her daughter instead: the child taken down into death and given back for half the year, so the initiate rehearsed the one thing every human faces and cannot practice: the going down, the loss, the possible return. The rational city, the polis of law and geometry and the marketplace, kept one irrational door open on purpose, one night a year, for everyone.

The turnstile

This is the essay where my own faith comes due.

I have spent my life arguing that technology is not the enemy of the sacred but its back door, that we came down the long hall of reason and found the mystical door standing at the end of it, that the dance floor at dawn is a real Eleusis, a temporary sacred zone where the mask comes off, the ego dissolves, and something genuinely holy happens through machines and sound. I believe that. This whole body of work rests on it. But the same technology that can throw the sacred door open to everyone can also put a turnstile in it. That is the fork in this essay, and it runs through the middle of my own hope. The dance floor was free and bodily and levelling, like the road to Eleusis. What is being built now is transcendence engineered, purchasable, disembodied. The exact inversion of what made Eleusis holy.

Watch it happen, honestly, because the promise is real too. There is a genuine renaissance in the medicine of altered states (real trials, real healing for the wounded and the treatment-resistant) and people are being helped. But look at the shape it takes. Substances that grew wild and free, that indigenous peoples used in ceremony for a thousand years and longer, run through the machine that turns everything into product. Molecules patented. Sessions priced past what most of the world could ever pay. Enlightenment as a retreat package, a luxury tier, a thing you book. And the communities the knowledge was taken from, the ones who kept these doors open while the West bricked them shut, are not in the room when the profit is counted. The kykeon, trademarked. I name it and move on, because it is real and it is not the deepest cut. The deepest cut is what it does to the sacred itself.

Descent to delivery

Run the four turns on transcendence and see what is left. It becomes designed: installed, not undergone; a state delivered instead of a road walked. It becomes elective and priced, the mystery with the price tag Eleusis refused on principle. It becomes deliverable on demand, which sounds like a gift until you notice that a thing you can summon whenever you want is a thing that has lost the descent, and the descent was the point. And it diverges instead of diffusing, because engineered awe, tuned per person, purchased per tier, is awe that fragments. The road to Eleusis worked because everyone on it saw the same light in the same darkness. If we engineer the experience of the holy, dial it in privately, tier it by what we can afford, the mystery that levelled everyone who walked into it becomes one more thing that sorts them. The descent that was the same for the slave and the king becomes a different descent depending on the tier.

Private lights

The final cruelty of the fork is not that it abolishes the sacred. I do not believe it can. The cruelty is subtler and worse. It privatises the sacred. It takes the one experience that levelled the slave and the king, that could not be bought and had to be walked into on foot, and makes it a product, personalised and priced, so that even before the last unknowable thing we no longer stand in the same darkness together. We each buy our own light. And the darkness that used to hold all of us at once, the shared descent that was the whole of its holiness, is parcelled out and sold by the seat.

One more thing before the chapter turns to its reckoning. The modern world did not need the fork to start bricking up the mystical door. It did that once already, centuries ago, quietly, in the private papers of the men we were taught to call the fathers of reason. Before I show you what we are losing, I have to show you how the door was first sealed, and by whom, and how the mystics were turned into their opposite in the record. That is the next essay. The story of the notes that were suppressed.

We each buy our own light.
